n Friday, the 5th day of Iyar, 5708, May 14, 1948, thousands of people were assembled outside Tel Aviv Museum. Inside, at four o'clock in the afternoon, David Ben-Gurion announced to the People's Administration, the People's Council, and representatives of the Jewish settlement and the Zionist Movement: "I shall read to you from the foundation scroll of the State of Israel."

The "She'hecheyanu" blessing and the singing of Ha-Tikva ended the ceremony. It had lasted 32 minutes. The members of the People's Council, which had now become the interim State Council, signed the scroll.

Tel Aviv Museum later became Independence Hall, and today contains a reconstruction of the hall in which the establishment of the state was announced and a permanent exhibition reviewing the historical background of the establishment of the state.

The building initially served as the private residence of Meir Dizengoff, the first Mayor of Tel Aviv, who had placed his private home at the service of the public in the form of an art museum for the first Hebrew city. Independence Hall is an extension of the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv.
