In 1966, the Israel Defence Forces established the Logistics and Technical branch under the direct command of the General Staff. The branch unified the various logistical services that had been developing in the military since before the establishment of the state. The branch also allowed for the separation of actual operations from the theoretical, technical and professional aspects of logistics.

In 1975, this development culminated in the establishment of the Logistics Corps, which has since provided the IDF with a well-defined home for logistics theory. Today, all units in the Logistics Branch receive training at the corps' Military Logistics Academy, as do all IDF involved in quartermastership.

The Corps also co-ordinates field maintenance and airborne supply, formulating operating theories and instructing all units involved.

As well as developing and conveying logistics theory, the corps also develops and supplies personal equipment, food, building materials and fuel -- both for standing units and for specific missions.
